I feel like part of our (and by our I mean society’s) taboos about money are reinforced by not talking about money in any real way. I get annoyed by articles that are about people in their 20s buying houses if they don’t mention that the down payment was a gift from parents and that they don’t have student loans for the same reason. So I applaud people who talk about it! I love Nicole’s monthly savings check-ins and I am trying to be more open about money with my friends.

At the same time there is a difference between sharing money information and bragging. Was your friend just excited about his new car and pay raise? If you have shared intimate money talk before, I think there is a decent chance he was just sharing and not trying to make you feel bad about your situation.
