It is an uphill battle with employers who only see a pretty screen and don’t care how it works and why. I have several memories of showing product demos and people only complimenting the UI and not the kick ass features that solved a real problem. I left the room thinking, ‘next time I’ll spend 2 hours making a sexy UI and not work the rest of the week.’

However, as time went on I noticed how ‘non-product people’ (those not working directly on the product) learn visually, I adjusted my strategy of how I showed them the product, using mix of user research and ‘pretty UI’. They seemed to understand the features more and came onboard. Now I not only get ‘that looks amazing, I love it’ but ‘that is such a good way to solve that issue our users are having’.

I think it is our job to design the way we present our products just as we design the products themselves. Don’t get mad at the users behaviour, learn why and work with them, just like any good product designer.
