Why we talk about information technologies and communication technologies
Esko Kilpi

There is another element you neglect to draw out. That is, these communications on social media are impeded by an interface that interferes with those communication and suppresses some views. Likewise, there is an increasing tendency for people to cloister in groups and not interact with others unlike them. Not to mention, people have to discuss trending topics of a most inane nature to gain visibility on these platforms. So I see the internet via social media increasing people’s alienation from one another and controlling the flow of information in a new, more subtle and insidious ways. For example journalism is now completely under the thumb of advertising, editorial independence is totally dead. So I don’t get your optimism but thanks for sharing your thoughts I think musing on the shifts of a previous era can be very illuminating, but it seems to me those tendencies are now accelerated.
