Metadata SEO Best Practices

Always start with your metadata as it’s one of the most crucial factors that help you rank on the first page of search engine results page on your desired keyword (s). Add metadata for each and every page you have on your website to maximize your chances to rank in Google. Remember, the keyword is the name of the game when it comes to SEO.

Page Title

First is page title. It has to be descriptive that explains the nature of your business under 50–60 characters, yes that’s 50–60 characters, not more than that to display it properly in the SERPs. Your Page Title must be keyword-loaded, and if you are a local business, must give your location as well. It should be interesting enough to capture people’s attention on the SERPs and technically sound to capture Google’s attention. Keyword loaded, length-appropriate Page Title is one of the best time-tested Metadata SEO best practices and it really works!

Meta Description

Next is the Meta Description. Your Meta Description describes what your page is all about and what it does for a visitor. Load your Meta Description with keywords you want your website to rank for in the SERPs. For instance, our website is a Digital Marketing Agency for Higher Education, Healthcare, SMEs, and Startups. So in our case, our keywords can be ‘web design agency’, ‘website design’, ‘inbound marketing for higher education’ etc. Although meta descriptions don’t play a direct role in SEO, it is one of the time-tested, proven SEO best practices for Metadata to increase the click-through rate on the SERPs.

Alt Tag

The alt tag is the ‘meta title’ for image media on your website and as you have guessed it, it describes what your image is all about to search engines. Also called ‘image text’, it helps Google read your page. Googlebot to this day cannot read an image, it just reads the text, that’s how it is capable of as of today. So when it starts ‘crawling’ your page, it ignores images without any alt tags in them. But when you add alt tag in an image, it becomes visible in the bot radar and it reads and scans it. Keyword-load your image alt tags to rank better in Google and Bing. although it appears to be a small thing, it makes a big difference.

How to find keywords for my business?

There are numerous free and premium tools out there that help you do that. I suggest you start with the Google Keyword Tool / Keyword Planner. Look for metrics such as monthly volume and keyword difficulty score in each keyword to decide which keywords can work best for you. Find the best keywords for your niche to rank better in Google. If you are a cell phone repair business in Bakersfield, CA, go for location specific keywords such as ‘phone repair in Bakersfield’ by adding a geo modifier at the end of your desired keyword (s) because this way, you will have a much easier time to get on top on the SERPs for both Google and Bing.

As you can imagine, it is much harder to rank for ‘phone repair’ or in our case, ‘website design’ as compared to, say ‘phone repair in Bakersfield’ or ‘web design in Bakersfield’. Phone repair and web design both are broader terms and many businesses are trying to rank on such broad keywords, that makes them difficult to rank for.

Remember, the more specific you get in your keywords, the easier it’s going to be to rank.
