The swings were damaged from vandalism in the late night of the park’s closing time. Children are unable to utilize the community’s efforts to create a safe environment for development and play because property is damaged by criminals and addicts, more than likely stemming from homelessness. St. James Park located in Downtown San Jose, California is in the center of major business office buildings, restaurants, and apartment towers while also maintaining its identity as a hub for the local homeless population. Over the years, this playground and grassy greenery has transitioned from being a wholesome place where families feel safe to practice play and feel that sense of community to a spot that at all hours of the day will house sleeping homeless families, addicts, and mental illness victims. As the cost of living increases, the rise in homelessness and crime will continue to grow with it. San Jose State University Spartans, Sam and Maddy have not been able to enjoy this park the same as they used to when they were children growing up in the city.
