Wi-Fi in the City

New York City isn’t just the city that never sleeps — it’s also the city that can never get enough Wi-Fi! According to a recent article, Wi-Fi is helping people save big on data in the Big Apple. Residents have used more than a petabyte of data — $15 million dollars worth — from New York City’s new LinkNYC Wi-Fi kiosks.

“If you’re looking for a way to lower your cellular bill, the solution might be literally right around the corner,” said LinkNYC general manager Jen Hensley. Available and accessible Wi-Fi — and the unlicensed spectrum that makes it work — can help you to keep more money in your pocket as you access the nearly unlimited opportunities that the Internet has to offer, from job postings to educational resources to the ability to connect with peers across the city, the nation, and even the world.

These cost-saving benefits make life better for locals and visitors alike. “Whether you’re running up against your monthly data limit,” Hensley continued, “getting throttled for using too much data, visiting New York City and trying to avoid a costly data plan while you’re in town, or if you’re one of the 1 in 5 New Yorkers that does not have access to broadband internet at home — LinkNYC is helping millions of people stay connected.”

However, Wi-Fi initiatives like the LinkNYC Wi-Fi kiosks can only help people and communities if there is sufficient unlicensed spectrum to keep up with network demand. Demand is rising — the amount of data used at the LinkNYC kiosk’s since they were installed last year would be enough to stream 1.1 million hours of video — and the amount of available unlicensed spectrum needs to keep up.

Policymakers, public interest groups, manufacturers, and innovators need to work together to make sure that more unlicensed spectrum becomes and stays available, that the increasing traffic is managed effectively, and that technologies such as LTE-U don’t interfere with Wi-Fi’s ability to stream your favorite Netflix show after work..

Everyone should be able to take advantage of Wi-Fi. Click here to stand up for Wi-Fi and unlicensed spectrum!
