Muhammad, the Messenger of God ( P):

Observe your duty to God in respect to the women, and recommend them to be well treated.

Muhammad, the Messenger of God, had a daughter whom he loved very deeply and tenderly. He used to say:

Fatimah (P) is a part of me; whoever wrongs her wrongs me and who pleases her pleases me.

Muhammad (P) visited her frequently; and on his return from any journey he called on her first before going to his own home. Whenever she approached, his eyes glowed with joy. He would take her in his arm, kiss her warmly and offer her his own seat. Indeed this kind, tender pattern is an ideal model for mankind.

All people are equal, as the teeth of a comb. There is no claim of merit of an Arab and non-Arab, or a white over a black person, or a male over a female. Only God fearing people merit a preference with God.

Like men, women are completely free in marriage, Imam Sadiq (P) — grandson of Muhammad and his sixth successor — has stated:

Women must be asked permission for their marriage, virgin or otherwise, and marriage is not correct without the woman’s behest.

Ali Ibn Hussain or Imam Sajjad (P) — grandson of Muhammad and his fourth successor :

you should know that God has made her ( your wife) a repose, a comfort and a companion, and a protector for you. It is incumbent upon each of you to thank God for the other and realize that the other one is God’s blessing for you. It is obligatory to be a good companion for God’s blessing, and to honor her and treat her gently.

God will establish the reward of as many years of fasting in the daytime and staying up at night to pray, as there are hairs on one’s body for helping his wife with the housework. The reward will be similar to what He has granted to the patient ones and the Prophet David , Jacob and Jesus .

Muhammad, the Messenger of God (P),told Imam Ali (P):

O Ali! God will record in the book of the martyrs the name of whoever serves his family at home, and does not disdain it. God will establish the reward of one thousand martyrs for each day and night, and will grant him the reward of the pilgrimage to the Holy House of God for every step he takes in this regard. God will reward him with a city in Heaven for every vein in his body.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (P) reports that a blind man asked permission to visit Lady Fatimah (P). Upon hearing this, Lady Fatimah (P) covered herself. Muhammad, the Messenger of God (P) , in order to illustrate her (P) level of understanding and knowing too well what her (P) response would be, asked:

O Fatimah! Why are you observing hijab (the Veil) when this man is unable to see you?

She (P) replied:

He cannot see me but I can see him and he can smell my fragrance.

In response to her wisdom, the Messenger of God (P) said:

I bear witness that you are part of me.

After their marriage, Ali (P) and Lady Fatimah (P) asked Muhammad, the Messenger of God (P) to advise them as to what their duties are. Muhammad (P) instructed that Ali (P) should undertake the tasks outside the house and Lady Fatima (P) should undertake the tasks inside the house. Lady Fatimah (P) said afterwards:

Other than God no one knows how happy I became when the Apostle of God saved me from interacting with men.

Nobody respects women but those who are dignified and generous and nobody insults them but those who are mean and contemptible.

Imam Ali (P):

Women are like flowers. They are not servants.

[Nahjul Balaghah, Letter 31.]

Now realize how oppressive and evil a man is who treats a flower violently, indifferently, while showing no appreciation for the woman’s flowering delicacy. She is a flower. Even if she is a scientist or a politician, when it comes to family affairs, she is a flower in her home. Yes, this is Islam’s view of women.
