I would argue that would be a good way to go for smaller teams to have the strongest engineers…

The question is how long it takes for someone who stopped actual coding to loose connection with reality?

Technology moves forward and at some point the architect start making decisions based on “white papers” without much knowledge what it actually means once you cut the crap written by other architects and sales people.

And another question – was this architect a good developer before, or just someone who is good at “taking the talk”?
