Benefits of Ozonated Water for Commercial Ice Machines

Ozone, O3, is a gas. It is important to note that ozone is recognized to be an effective oxidant used to reduce the unpleasant tastes and oders in drinking water. So what are the benefits of ozone treated water, to make ice, for consumption in your commercial ice machine? Having said that, there are benefits to using ozone treated water when making ice in your commercial ice machine.

Restaurants, bars, hotel beverage vendors, convenience stores, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and clinics can make sure they are providing a clean supply of ice by adding ozone to the water. Not only will ozone purify the ice, it sanitizes the ice dispenser to ensure clean ice is always produced and the resulting ice will be bacteria-free.

Three things you should know on the benefits of ozonated water for your commercial ice machine.

  • In June 2001, ozone was FDA-approved as a food and water additive. Ozone processes are safe, energy efficient, and avoid chlorine. The amount of residual ozone in cubes are well below levels of detection by the average person and does not have any effect on the taste.
  • The amount of ozone contained in the ice cube is very small. The ozone remains effective from freezing to storage and transportation until it is dispensed and served, at which time it dissolves harmlessly.
  • When in water form, ozone is active for about 15 minutes. When in ice form, ozone is well preserved and dissolves safely in the ice bin. The ice gradually melts and the resulting water drains from the bin. The ozone from melted ice will sanitize bin surfaces, as well as the drain fixture and line.
