Tips for Good Supermarket Shelving Layout

Store shelving design and layout have been at the top of retailers’ list of “things to do” to have a successful store. The products will sell when a store’s shelving design is good. The purpose of your store’s design is not to look pretty, but to create the environment to attract customers, entice them to spend time in the store and persuade them to purchase impulsively.

When customers enter a supermarket, they generally go to the right of the store. The departments usually located at the front right are deli, produce, bakery and floral. These departments are placed here to stimulate the shopper with the fresh-baked goods and the aroma of flowers. It’s the sights, scents and tastes that are part of the psychology.

Top Shelf Supermarket Products

On the top shelf, you will find smaller brand products, regional brand products and gourmet brand products. Placing these items on the top shelf helps the supermarket stand out from its competitors. The smaller brands usually don’t have the budgets to pay for the favorable placement. These items are also found on the top shelf and are usually chosen by local store managers.

“Eye-Level” Grocery Shelves

What you will find on these shelves are the best sellers and other leading brands. This is considered premium space for manufacturers. Brands that sell the best are always placed on the “eye-level shelving,” front and center, right in your sight. It is the best placement for the manufacturers and they pay for it. You will see higher-priced items or items with the highest markup.

Secondary brands that might benefit from being shelved next to top-selling products also pay for placement on the “eye-level” shelf. You can also look below the “eye-level” to find similar products that cost less.

Kid’s Eye-Level Store Products

Children can often read the products placed on these shelves. The products located here are all products with kid appeal. These products are meant to attract kid’s attention so they will react and reach for the products. A good shopping tip for parents is to leave the kids at home otherwise you may spend more money. When the little ones aren’t with you, it prevents parents from adding kid-friendly items to their grocery carts.

Bottom Shelf Bulk Warehouse Shelving

The bottom shelf will often store private, oversized and bulk items. Store brands go on the bottom shelves because people who buy the store brands will always go for them. Grocery stores carry bulk items to compete with the warehouse stores such as Sam’s and Costco. Bulk items are awkward, so the bottom shelf is the best place for them.
