Atletico Madrid vs Leicester City preview
Atletico and Leicester play the first leg on Wednesday at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid
Atletico Madrid and Leicester City have given us two of the most romantic football stories in recent years.
The La Liga winners of 2014 and the reigning Premier League champions will go head to head in what could possibly be the most epic of encounters this season in the Champions League.
Tactically and playing style-wise these two teams are very similar. Smart pressing, firm defense and plenty of effort for playing direct, counter-attacking football has become the identity of both clubs in their respective successful campaigns and it will be interesting to see how they perform against each other on such a big stage as the quarter final stage of the Champions League.
Having won 5 Premier League games in a row with new manager Craig Shakespeare, Leicester have avoided the relegation battle before the business end of the season in England. Now with nothing else to play for but the Champions League, all focus and determination will be turned to this game as the club will try to write another piece of history. Shakespeare decided to rest some of his stars ahead of the trip to Madrid and lost away to Everton in a 4:2 thriller. Simpson, N’Didi and Riyad Mahrez are all expected to return to the side on Wednesday. Captain Wes Morgan will not be available for selection however, as the Jamaican remains on the sidelines with a back injury.
Atletico Madrid are currently 3rd in La Liga and did well to get a draw against leaders Real Madrid in their last league game especially because Sevilla are breathing in their neck for the place that wins automatic qualification to next season’s Champions League.
Tiago, Augusto Fernandez, Miguel Angel Moya and Sime Vrsaljko remain on the sidelines for Atletico, while Kevin Gameiro and Nicolas Gaitan are doubtful.
Verdict: Being the more capable team of asserting dominance in a game, Atletico will be the team with more ball possession and will strive to get the job done at home, but seing how Sevilla fared against this Leicester side it could prove to be a mistake as being the underdogs and looking helpless in defense is exactly how Leicester like to set up.
