The Diner
Speechless, with abandoned hope;
self-possessed by the holy ghost.
A crime scheme, insolvency, a wrong turn, up in arms, standing unnerved.
“Say, say, say what you want me to do.
Take, take, take what you want to.”
So echoes the voice of the young waitress,
and a glance back at the cook is what tipped the thieves off.
A payphone, in jealousy, it screams out like a fallen tree,
and shots fly to sound of the ring.
Silence, like a bedroom fire;
house arrest with the devil’s choir.
The front page, a cold harangue, the wet floor, an indirect damage report.
“Say, say, say what you want me to do.
Just say what you want me to do. What do you want me to do?
Say, say, say — ”
A payphone, it screams out.
