Souheil gets it! Modern web designers need to blend form AND function. Start-ups desperately need product designers who understand how to blend business requirements, user preferences, and design principles.
The portion regarding self-education rings true for me. Two years ago, I started my career in management consulting. At the beginning of this year, I set a goal to become a UX Designer. During flights across the country, I taught myself the basics of web design, including many a few tools (e.g. Sketch). This fall, I took a new role as a UX designer on a software build for my company.
The UX job market is hot. Do your due diligence, learn the basics, and you can break into the field within a year’s time.
