Confirmation bias is an insidious phenomenon, isn’t it?
When people decide that they don’t believe in God/gods/paranormal/etc., in my experience it’s usually because they (me included) have made what they (we) consider to be a logical decision based on rational, critical thinking.
The irony comes when the same people jump from correlation to causation due to their confirmation bias and follow it up with the Semmelweis reflex (the tendency to ignore new evidence that refutes a paradigm) and in-group favoritism. Those who consider themselves to be rational thinkers can easily slip down the slope into hasty assumptions, patting themselves on the back all the way down.
