Can Formartine United win the League title?

Under Kris Hunter, Formartine United has recruited frightening quality across the board and United has become the team to watch out for this season. Hunter has been serious in the club’s mission to challenge for the Highland League title with massive recruitment of top players. Scott Barbour, Graham Rodgers, Paul Lawson, keeper Andy Reid, Jamie Michie, Neil Gauld, Gary Wood, Max Berton, the return of Craig McKeown, Jonny Crawford and goalkeeper Phil Anderson all joined Hunter’s revolution.

After Hunter came to the club, after the exit of Manager Steven Patterson and Assistant Craig Stewart he rebuilt the squad with many departures arising such as Paul Napier moving back to his old club Buckle Thistle and Gary Clark joining the local Aberdeenshire amateur league.

Top striker on the bench

A couple of seasons ago you wouldn’t think that their top scorer Cammy Keith would be the bench this happened on Saturday afternoon 1–0 win over Forres Mechanics on the opening day of the season which was surprising. Keith a striker who has bagging in a large part of the goals for the Pitmedden side therefore it will be weird not to see him on the pitch this season. This shows that there is now a big fight for a place in the team every week and you can’t expect to have a place in the line ups each week.

Consistency

They have the foundations to challenge however you will need consistency throughout the season to be crowned champions. Consistency is key in winning a league title when you look at Brora the last two seasons they won most games regardless of their performance and due to being clinical and being able to carve out results when needed.

Maybe Like Gordon Strachan’s Middlesbrough team

But also it could be like what happened under Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough as his team looked great on paper but it didn’t work out for them. Strachan’s side were tipped to be favourites for the title but it turned out to be a disappointing season. The United faithful will have to be a bit patient until the team clicks together completely. I believe the title race will be between Brora and Formartine. The question circling around is can United win the title, I would be stupid to rule them out of it.

Depth squad

They have the quality of players to lift the trophy. There is no doubt about that. The squad appears stronger and deeper than last term, and so they are expected to finish top of the table or best of the rest. Former Motherwell and Ross County player Paul Lawson signing for the club shows that they mean business in terms of going for the title. The depth of the squad will bring added expectations from supporters and neutrals alike. Time will tell.

You never know Formartine could be crowned league champions or this could just be a season to develop and click together as a team before they go on to challenge for the league in the future. I do feel that Brora Rangers will be too strong for Formartine this season.
