My first open source contribution

September marked my first accepted merge request to an open source project. The submitted change was for a small typo within the documentation for the coala project!

This pull request and later ones taught me more than expected. I felt comfortable with git beforehand, but learned so much more using git rebase in the process.

If this piqued your interest then I’d recommend visiting coala’s gitter channel. The community at coala welcomes newcomers with open arms. The project is participating in github’s and digital ocean’s hackerfest!

coala is a language independent code linter built using python. coala plugins written in Java and Javascript are also available, if Python’s not your cup of tea. The best way to start is to join coala’s gitter channel, say hi and tell them that you’re looking to help. Someone will definitely be there to help you! Finally, coala also participates in the Google Summer of Code program.
