Claire Wineland
This is a strange letter to write. How do you thank someone who you’ve never met for saving your life? How do you thank someone who has died? In an open letter to the universe…
Dear Claire,
I remember joking around when I was younger about the children on the Sally Struthers commercials that would say, “I never met you, but I love you.” How incredulous to love someone who you have never met? Yet, here I am writing a letter to you, and I have nothing but love to send. Not love like creepy stalker cyber love, but love based on gratitude and inspiration.
Five years ago, I was stuck in a very dark place. I was petrified of death, yet I desperately wanted to free myself from the anxiety and depression of my life. Watching a show, My Last Days, I ‘met’ Claire, and she taught me so much in such a short period of time. “People need to understand that it doesn’t take that much to change their lives. It’s all just perspective, duh.” Perspective. Claire motivated me to take back control of my life. “Death is inevitable, living a life you are proud of is something you can control.” Some days I’m better at it than others, but I remember where I came from and look forward to where I am going. I try to enjoy the moments, instead of focusing on writing the entire story.
Forever, I will be indebted to Claire. Her influence on the Earth is widespread and will continue far beyond her death. I am thankful to have her on the other side, breathing deeply and watching over all of us. My only regret is that I never got to see her speak in person. Her life lessons are instilled in my core, and will keep me pushing against the challenges of this world. I’ll live a better life, not just for Claire, but because she taught me the importance of doing it for myself and for the benefit of those around me.
