Stop Thinking and Just Do It!!!

Sounds Just About Right

I must confess: I tend to think too much about things that upon closer analysis, aren’t of much significance. This can become problematic as it can have a negative impact on my ability to set out and achieve goals. A recent example of this is is when I had to decide on what I wanted my next article on Medium to be about. My mind would think about all the potential topics and worry about a lot of unneccasary details such as: “Is this topic interesting enough?”, “Is this topic too politically incorrect?”, “Will I be able to write a lengthy enough article etc.. This kind of thinking would ultimately lead me to not actually writing an article and thus prove to be counterproductive. The most common term used to refer to this is Analysis Paralysis.

Preach Sister!

So naturally, the question arises: What is the best way to conquer Analysis Paralysis? The answer is surprisingly simple: Stop thinking and just do whatever it is you set out to do. But Sef, what do you mean to stop thinking? Don’t we need to think in order to be functional human beings? Although thinking is important as it can allow you to solve problems and help you make decisions, it doesn’t help you very much outside of those things. Imagine having to walk up a steep hill. Although manageable for the most part, it would still be a challenge. Now imagine having to climb up that steep hill with 300 bricks stacked on top of your shoulders. Not even the strongest of men (or women) would be able to climb up that hill. That’s exactly what is is like with your thoughts. Each one of them is like a brick and the more you have, the more they will weigh you down and ultimately, prevent you from achieving your goals.

So remember, thinking isn’t neccasarily bad but overthinking definitely is. It hindered my goal of writing multiple articles a week and I won’t allow it to do so anymore. Anyways, if you found this article to be helpful, then please share and spread this message to as many people as possible! Til next time, I’m out. Peace!
