What is the difference between stress and anxiety?

Stress and anxiety often go hand in hand.

What is stress?
Stress is caused by external factors, such as being late for a meeting or giving a big speech. Stress usually disappears after the external conditions are removed. Think of stress like an alarm clock. It’s the constant signal that tells you, “Hey, it’s time to do something!” And if you don’t listen to it, your stress hormones will increase and cause you more stress!

What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry caused by internal factors and can often be characterized by “feelings of dread” or “fear”. Usually, after the stress is gone, the anxiety remains. The bottom line is that if you’re stressed, it’s probably an external stressor that’s causing you to worry, and that may be causing your anxiety!

Stress and anxiety can cause serious problems. It is important to seek professional medical or psychiatric help if you need medical help.
