Excellent article. The problem is scale, seemingly unending increasing returns. It’s a serious problem that will upend our democracy. The problem is who owns the data. Sure, users have had free access to low barrier platform markets for a decade now. Free blogging, free podcasting, free marketing, free audiences for your writing, low cost transportation, low cost rentals, the list goes on… But what dividend do users get for their contributions, for their billions of eyeballs and several billion more hours of personal investment? In this market, free is simply not enough. Grinding away in the social media data mill, to evoke William Blake, all day and all night in a hellish bid to replace oneself is not enough. It’s a fat kick to the curb.
