The Next Chapter
The story of 2018 was one of women rising up to change the face of American politics — and of Democrats investing in diverse candidates to lead our country forward.
When I started Off The Sidelines more than seven years ago, I dreamed that record numbers of women would run for office on their values and priorities — and that when they did, this team would be there with the essential resources and networks of support to help power them to victory. And in 2018, we made progress toward that goal by helping more women run for office than ever before.
We worked with women like Lauren Underwood, who, when she first launched her campaign, struggled to get endorsements and support — even from the left. Thanks to you, Off The Sidelines was able to give Lauren her first major endorsement, her first major donation and her first real shot to build a formidable campaign — and we’re so proud to call her congresswoman! Now, we’re preparing to lend early support to women even thinking about running for office in 2019 or 2020, and we’re making sure soon-to-be candidates know we’ll have their backs from day one.
As a registered nurse with a preexisting condition, Lauren Underwood for Congress was inspired to get #OffTheSidelines…www.facebook.com
We started this movement long before President Trump came into the picture, and we’ll keep going long after he’s out of it. Because for all our success, we still have a ways to go. We’re not close to true gender parity in our state governments or Congress. Women make up 51% of the population. We should hold at least 51% of elected offices, and we should fight for equal representation by encouraging diverse women to run and supporting their campaigns when they do. Because every decision, whether it’s how we organize our economy, provide access to health care, protect our planet or fund retirement, affects us all.
Off The Sidelines helped get us just a little closer this year, but we have to keep pushing forward. We have to keep making our voices heard. Not just on Election Day, but every day. Here’s how Off The Sidelines will keep fighting and how you can fight alongside us:
- We’re going to keep holding President Trump accountable. We need to use all of our voices and power to minimize the damage the Trump administration can cause and to repair what it has already destroyed. We need to fight the GOP’s extreme policies in the Senate and come together with the House to hold President Trump accountable. As Off The Sidelines moves forward, we’ll call on you to mobilize — to call your senators and representatives, to speak out for what you believe in — because these fights need you.
- We’re going to stay engaged. Thanks to your unprecedented activism, we’ve come back from being locked out of power in Congress and in our states. You have led the resistance against attacks on our rights and against the unfathomable cruelties President Trump unleashes. Don’t stop leading.
- We’re going to support progressive campaigns. We need you to support and encourage the people who will come off the sidelines to run and be next cycle’s victors — because we’re still at a perilous moment in American life, and in a time such as this, we must not let up. We can’t rest while this administration carries out daily injustices against Americans — hardworking people waiting on their next paycheck, people of color suffering discrimination — and against our planet and our safety and security as a nation.
I hope you stay in this fight. We still have so much work to do, and we want to keep the conversation going with you. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates, opportunities to act and to learn about the leaders who are changing our institutions now and those who will run and win in 2019, 2020 and beyond.
I’m so proud of this team and all we’ve achieved. But I won’t rest — not now, not ever — until we are all represented at all levels of government and society. The time is ours. The time is now. And the next chapter is ours to write, too.
