I’ve been teaching the boys how to cook.

It’s okay to not feel like Supermom right now (or ever).

Balancing parenting and work can be a real challenge — but for me, as I can imagine it has been for many parents, it has felt particularly challenging during this pandemic. Like many families across the country who might be sheltered in place and working from home right now, my entire family has been cooped up in the house. Henry, Theo, Jonathan and I have all been adjusting to new work and school situations, and I’m still trying to find my balance, as I can only imagine you are too.

It’s been hard to remember every last thing needed to…

Take risks, even when the outcomes are uncertain.

As I’ve been crossing off items on the year-end to-do list and spending time with family over the holidays, I’ve been taking time to step back and reflect on the whirlwind of the past year. There’s one big takeaway that I want to share with as many of you as possible heading into 2020:

We should always, always take risks to accomplish our big goals, even if failure is a possibility.

There are so many problems to be fixed, so many complex challenges that we must rise to. We must be unafraid to meet them; unafraid to brandish the fights…

It’s time for mental health to be taken as seriously as physical health.

Transcending race, gender, age, religion, or life experience, mental health is a growing crisis in our country — and it has gone without sufficient attention, care or resources for too long. Antiquated stigma and systemic failures have kept millions of Americans from sharing their suffering with others, forcing them to struggle quietly.

One in five American adults is coping with a mental health condition and the mental health of our youth is in decline. This has debilitating everyday impacts for too many Americans. …

Rural America deserves a partner in the White House. Here’s my plan to put rural Americans back in the driver’s seat.

A bright future for the nation depends on the health and prosperity of rural America. Americans across every community — cities, suburbs, towns, and rural areas — face the shared challenges of our time: a climate crisis that threatens our way of life; an economy that has left far too many Americans out of the middle class; a corrupt government that puts the interests of corporations and the wealthy before those of our communities and working people.

Like all Americans, rural Americans want a fair shot to earn a good life and contribute to the progress of our nation. But…

Saving our planet should be this generation’s moonshot.

Polar ice and glaciers are melting at a rapid pace. Heavy rains are causing catastrophic flooding in the Midwest, leaving farms submerged and homes and businesses destroyed. Changes in our oceans are disrupting fisheries and killing coral reefs. Droughts and wildfires are threatening communities across the West, and extreme weather is leaving millions of people without homes and causing billions of dollars in damage every year.

We’re already seeing the effects of climate change on communities across our country and the world.

My remarks at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs

Chicago, IL — July 24, 2019

Thank you for inviting me to speak today.

I want to start by telling a story that demonstrates the failures of our current foreign policy.

I’ve traveled to the Middle East with other Senators. Our goal was to understand the regional security threats posed by the war in Syria and see for ourselves the humanitarian crisis, particularly the fate of Syrian refugees. On the trip we met refugee leaders and visited refugee camps, but one moment sticks with me vividly to this day.

In Jordan, we met with Syrian refugee mothers. These are women…

I’m going to fight for your family the same way I would fight for my own: with everything I’ve got.

American families deserve better. It’s as simple as that.

Not only has Donald Trump lied to them, but he’s used his Administration to punch down on the people and places he promised he would help. My Trump Broken Promises Tour was a chance to share with voters how I’ll accomplish what Donald Trump said he’d do, and didn’t. It was also a chance for me to hear the stories of families hurt by Trump’s lies and failures firsthand.

In Pittsburgh, PA, I met Nila Patterson, a mom who is thousands of dollars in debt after two trips to the ER…

Our seniors deserve a president who’ll fight for them. I will.

In America, we make a promise to seniors: After a lifetime of working and contributing to this country, you’ll earn the benefit of a secure retirement, good health care, and peace of mind in your later years. To me, that’s a commitment we have to keep.

Our current president campaigned on another promise to seniors. He said he’d never cut Social Security or Medicare, and said he’d get prescription drug costs down. It took far less than two years to break those promises. …

No more broken promises — I’ll stand up for women, including fighting for their reproductive rights

Our country needs to ask ourselves a question: Do we value women? Because if we do, then we need to stop treating their rights as negotiable. Unfortunately, our government has a persistent habit of building compromise on women’s backs — and when the negotiating room door closes, it tends to be reproductive rights that go out the window first.

Attacks on reproductive freedom don’t only hurt women, and women’s rights aren’t limited to reproductive rights either. Women deserve a president who’ll fight for them in every sphere, from ensuring equal pay and paid leave to protecting families from gun violence…

No more broken promises — I’ll combat gun violence and protect American families

Every day, 100 Americans are killed with guns. This should not only make every single one of our leaders heartsick and furious — it should make them act to stop the deaths. But despite countless shootings and massive public support for gun safety measures, we still haven’t passed commonsense reform. There’s just one reason: The NRA, and its blood money, have a chokehold on Republicans in Congress.

We need a president who will stand up to the gun lobby’s greed and take action to save lives, even if Congress won’t. Donald Trump has proven he will never be that president.
