This week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments that will determine the future of the widely popular and successful DACA program. Senate and House Democrats united in defense of DACA and Dreamers.

President Trump’s administration argued before the highest court in the land that Dreamers — many of whom have been in America virtually their whole lives — do not belong.

After flip-flopping on the issue, and failing to pass commonsense, comprehensive immigration reform, it’s shameful that President Trump is trying to get the Supreme Court to do his dirty work by putting Dreamers under threat of mass deportation.

When the DACA program was established in 2012, under a long tradition of administrative discretion, it changed the lives of thousands of Dreamers for the better. And our country was made better for it.

But because of President Trump, and his relentless scapegoating of immigrants and cynical using of the Dreamers as political pawns, all of that has been cast into chaos.

His termination of DACA threw nearly 700,000 Dreamers and their families into limbo. Now, these hardworking and patriotic Americans live in uncertainty, plagued by the possibility that any moment, they can be forced to leave this country.

It’s cruel. It’s counterproductive. And, it undermines American values.

Thankfully, one of the first things that House Democrats did after winning the majority was pass a permanent legislative solution for DACA recipients: HR 6, The American Dream and Promise Act.

Now, it’s up to the Supreme Court to defend the program and up to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring the Dream and Promise Act to the Senate floor.

The House has done its job. But where are the Senate Republicans who claim to stand with the Dreamers?

It is time to do the right thing for the Dreamers.

While the President continues his baseless attack on immigrants, we will remind him of one of the most important realities of the American story — that this country is indeed a nation of immigrants. And that must not be forgotten.
