Senate Democrats Fight To Keep The Internet Free & Open

One year ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), under the guidance of the Trump administration, overturned net neutrality protections and dismantled equal opportunity to free and open internet for all Americans. Net neutrality protects consumers by prohibiting internet service providers from blocking, slowing down, or discriminating against consumer access to certain online content. Without the protections of net neutrality, broadband corporations can slow down speed and undermine access to websites by requiring internet companies to pay a premium to reach consumers, essentially creating fast lanes and slow lanes. This hurts working families and small business owners, many of who already struggle to afford too-high cable and internet bills each month.

Last year, the Senate passed a bill to restore net neutrality with bipartisan support. Unfortunately, Republicans led the House last year, and they refused to vote on our bipartisan legislation. Earlier this year, now that the House is back in Democratic control, House Democrats and one Republican passed the Save the Internet Act¸ legislation that will restore net neutrality protections and ensure open access for internet users nationwide.

This week, Senate Democrats demanded an immediate vote on the #SaveTheInternet Act.

Republicans blocked that vote.

Why? It’s not unpopular. In fact, 86% of Americans and 82% of Republicans disagree with the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to repeal net neutrality.

Clearly, Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans care more about padding the pockets of huge cable and internet corporations than protecting a free, open, and affordable internet for everyday Americans.

Despite overwhelming support from the American people, Mitch McConnell has buried this bill to restore net neutrality in his legislative graveyard, alongside other legislation such as renewing the Violence Against Women Act, increasing gun safety, and protecting voting rights.

Americans deserve better than having critical, bipartisan legislation wither away in Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard.

People deserve a free and open internet without the confines of corporate control. We demand Mitch McConnell call a vote and #SaveTheInternet.
