Announcing our First Granite Stater of the Month: Elizabeth Atwood
Today, I am excited to announce my new Granite Stater of the Month initiative to recognize New Hampshire citizens who represent our state’s values and all-hands-on-deck spirit.
Our first Granite Stater of the Month is Elizabeth Atwood of Rochester. Elizabeth, who struggled with a substance use disorder herself, is a Capacity Building Specialist with SOS Recovery Community Organization, where she helps individuals who are struggling with substance misuse access recovery services and support networks.
Elizabeth’s story is one of strength and courage. She sought treatment and recovery services for her own substance use disorder, and now uses that experience to help others. At the New Horizon’s homeless shelter, Elizabeth received help enrolling in Medicaid which allowed her to undergo treatment for her substance use disorder, improve her physical health, and receive counseling.
Through her own perseverance and determination, Elizabeth regained custody of her son, got a job, and now receives health insurance from her employer.
Elizabeth uses her experiences with a substance use disorder to inform her work at SOS Recovery Community Organization, where she works tirelessly to help individuals struggling with addiction. She does everything from helping create policy and procedures, offering trainings to community members, to helping find detox beds for people who come into the Rochester facility.
As many Granite Staters like Elizabeth know, the heroin, fentanyl, and opioid crisis is the most pressing public health and safety challenge facing New Hampshire. More than ever, New Hampshire needs people like Elizabeth who are dedicated to helping combat this crisis.
Elizabeth’s story is one of strength and courage. She sought treatment and recovery services for her own substance use disorder, and now uses that experience to help others.
Thank you to Elizabeth for telling her inspirational story and for her drive to help others who are facing the same challenges she did.
Elizabeth truly represents the best of New Hampshire, and I am honored to recognize her as the Granite Stater of the Month.
