Category 1 and 2 of Sentinel’s Turing-3 Cosmos/Tendermint based Testnet are now complete, and Category 3 will be extended until November 17th 2020.

You can view the Turing-3 explorer and see participating validators and other data points at: https://explorer.sentinel.co

Turing-3 Incentivization Schedule and Category Description

Category 1 and 2 were focused on validator performance and up-time, and 50 validators participated in both of these categories (maximum number of active validators for the competition). The purpose of these two categories was to:

  1. Identify potential validators for the Sentinel Hub Mainnet and provide an environment for testing for validators to gain experience.
  2. Ensure that the Turing-3 hub implementation was secure and stable in preparation for Sentinel’s mainnet hub implementation.

The winners of Category 1 and 2 will be announced with the winner of Category 3 after the completion of Category 3 in November.

Category 1 Rewards Distribution

Over the course of Category 1 of the competition, 49 out of 50 validators on the network were jailed due to various reasons such as misconfiguration of sentry nodes and other setup related issues, however most of the ‘jailing’ resulted from an attack on Turing-3.

One of the most important events during the Turing-3 Testnet was a spam attack that was conducted by ‘…’, with the intention of destabilizing the network. This spam attack was successful as most validators did not set a ‘minimum transaction fee’ to prevent such an attack.

The ‘Never Jailed’ category is being modified to include 3 different tranches of rewards:

  1. Sentinel tokens to be allocated for the single ‘Never Jailed’ validator and the participant who conducted the attack
  2. Sentinel tokens to be allocated for validators which were actively trying to troubleshoot and help other validators during the attack
  3. Sentinel tokens to be allocated for all other validators who maintained 90%+ uptime and qualified for category 2

This event of the spam attack on Turing-3 is extremely reminiscent of the Cosmos ‘Game of Zones’ Phase 1 where Sentinel was one of the two validators left standing after an attack on the GOZ hub before going on to win Phase 1A.

“The Sentinel team along with the ‘Responsible’ team had the highest up-time or ‘liveliness’ in terms of its connection to the Cosmos GOZ Testnet Hub with both teams staying connected to the Hub for exactly 102 Hrs, 30 mins and 40 secs while being able to mitigate an attack that caused increased down-time for every other team.”

Category 3 Extension

Category 3 of the Turing-3 testnet is being extended to end on the 17th of November in order to ensure an increase in the submissions for this category. Category 3 incentivizes community members to find vulnerabilities in Sentinel’s custom dVPN related modules built on Cosmos, which will be used in Sentinel’s p2p bandwidth marketplace.

Category 3 is open to all participants, even those who did not host a validator in Category 1 and 2.

Between now and the end of the competition, there will be more documentation released on these modules and the v3 client will also most likely be released in this period of time, providing participants with a visualization of the purpose of the modules.
