Boys outshine girls in HSLC exam; pass percentage dips


GUWAHATI, May 28: Boys performed better than girls in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination for the year 2014, the result for which was declared by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) on Wednesday.

The pass percentages of male and female students are 65.33 and 57.73 respectively. The overall pass percentage recorded in the 2014 HSLC exam was 61.42 compared to last year’s 71.71.

Of the 3,69,075 students appeared in the HSLC exam, 2,26,685 students passed the exam (39,006 in 1st division, 82,793 in 2nd division and 1,04,886 in 3rd division).

The 2014 HSLC exam recorded lowest pass percentage in the last five years.

The top 10 positions were bagged by 25 students (male students — 15 and female students — 10).

The performance of students of both private and government schools was almost equal this time compared to last few years.

Achyut Ranjan Gogoi of Nazira Jatiya Vidyalaya, Sivasagar secured the first position (585 marks out of 600) followed by Jyoti Krishnan Kumar Kalita (581 marks out of 600) of Maloibari High School, Sonapur. The third position was jointly secured by three students — Smitakshi Goswami (579 marks out of 600) of Salt Brooke School, Dibrugarh, Sanniddhya Sarma (579 marks out of 600) of BVFC Model High School, Dibrugarh and Anirjit Hom Roy (579 marks out of 600) of BPCM Baby Land English Medium High School, Kokrajhar.

In the AHM examination, 9,956 candidates appeared and of them, 6,113 candidates passed the exam. However, performance of girls was better than the boys in the AHM examination for the year 2014. Imdadur Rahman of Rakhaldubi High Madrassa in Goalpara district secured highest marks (538) in the exam.

After announcing the results, SEBA Chairman JNV Subramaniam said, “The remotest district of Dhemaji recorded the highest pass percentage of 80.39 in the State, while the district of Chirang recorded lowest pass percentage of 29.79.”
