Eviction drive: Bijoya alleges discrimination
GUWAHATI, July 6: Alleging discrimination by the Tarun Gogoi–led Congress government in its ongoing eviction drive in the city, BJP MP Bijoya Chakraborty said that poor families had been targeted so far and wealthy ones spared by the administration. On this issue, Chakraborty met State Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla on Sunday and sought detailed information from him.
The BJP MP said that many rich families were given land patta for their settlement in the wetland areas in and around the city. “Several illegal constructions were allowed to take place near wetlands in and around the city,” she added.
Chakraborty cited the examples of Hamja Properties owned by AIUDF chief and perfume baron Badaruddin Ajmal and Ginger Hotel which are carrying out construction works illegally near wetlands in the city.
She said that flash–flood problem in the city could not be solved by clearing illegal settlements along the Bharalu River banks only. To solve the water–logging problem in the city, its wetlands should be first cleared of encroachment.
