Huge protest against Sanjay Sinh’s candidature
Guwahati, February 6: Just a day prior to the Rajya Sabha poll in Assam, there was widespread protest against the candidature of Sanjay Sinh as a Congress candidate on Thursday. Sinh used to represent the Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh as a Congress candidate.
On Thursday, the KMSS, AASU, AJYCP and other organizations staged protests against the candidature of Sanjay Sinh. The KMSS gheraoed the Assam Assembly gate around 11.30 am. The outfit ‘‘prayed’’ outside the Assembly that the Assam Congressmen should retain their ‘‘sense’’ in the wake of the party ticket given to an outsider, Sanjay Sinh.
KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi also said, ‘‘If any of the BJP MLAs get sold, we shall not only stage demonstration outside Sarbananda Sonowal’s residence but also disrupt Narendra Modi’s rally in Guwahati on February 8. If any AGP MLAs do any mischief, its party chief Prafulla Kumar Mahanta will also be not allowed to live in peace. At the same time, if the AIUDF does such mischief as to make it possible for the Congress-BPF alliance to win all the three seats, we shall be stopping the politics of Badruddin Ajmal in the State.’’
On the other hand, the AASU led a protest rally against the candidature of Sanjay Sinh from Guwahati Club to the DC office (Kamrup Metro). The students’ organization warned the Congress that there must not be any horse-trading among any parties. ‘‘It is highly unfortunate that a person like Sanjay Sinh, who has no touch with Assam in any way, has been chosen by the Congress as its Rajya Sabha candidate. We are warning the Congress that it must not betray the people of Assam,’’ said AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya.
The AASU rally was supported by the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU).
The AJYCP also staged a three-hour sit-in demonstration at Dispur Last Gate against the candidature of Sanjay Sinh on Thursday.
