Rahul in Assam amid bandhs and protests

Guwahati, February 25: Prior to Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Assam, some organizations such as the All Koch Rajbanshi Students’ Union (AKRSU), All Bengali Youth Students’ Federation (BYSF) and All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) called a 36–hour Assam bandh from Monday evening.

The Tai–Ahom Youth Federation (TAYF) called a 12–hour Assam bandh on Tuesday, while the Tiwa Jatiya Parishad (TJP) called a 24–hour middle Assam bandh. The TAYF burned the effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Rahul Gandhi.

The Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), on the other hand, also gave a 12–hour Karbi Anglong bandh. Rahul was in Diphu amid this bandh. In other words, Rahul was in Assam amid a series of bandhs and protest against him by different organizations. At different places in the State, tyres, one truck and one Tata pick–up van were set on fire.

The KMSS’ main intention on Tuesday was to disrupt Rahul’s rally in Guwahati, but it could not succeed.

The police had to resort to lathi–charge at different places in Guwahati to thwart the protesters from causing harm to the Congress vice–president’s rally.
