Why Collaboration Is Hard And How We Used It To Bring “Big Hero 6” To Life
The Academy

In a 1996 Organizational Dynamics article co-authored by Henry Mintzberg, Jan Jorgensen, Deborah Dougherty and Frances Westley called ‘Some surprising things about collaboration — knowing how people connect makes it work better’ the benefits and the limitations of collaborative effort are discussed. Interestingly the authors make reference to a 1940 work by Mary Parker Follet published in Dynamic Administration in which she introduces the collaboration idea. In this framework she also discusses a third way, that neither dominates another party nor compromises, so that all achieve their goals. It requires in Follet’s terms, invention and recognition and pulling away from a no-man’s land of mutually exclusive needs.
