I pay you to care

“Pay to care” is interesting concept. And to me — one of the reasons why I wouldn’t use psychotherapist services. My thinking more in line with this: “If I have a particular issue, I would pay to resolve it.”

When I go to GP I expect him to care about my health, not “me”. Sure enough, I expect respect and professional attitude, since some of procedures/topics can be sensitive. And I can measure results.

I expect dentist to care about state of my teeth & gums. I expect fitness trainer to care about my fitness level. And I would expect psychotherapist to care about state of my mind. Not “me”.

So, if I go to psychotherapist looking to get rid of anxiety or panic attacks, which are bugging me, I would expect him/her to focus on that.

Also, I do expect to provide only necessary information. For example, would you expect to tell your fitness trainer about your childhood? Probably not, unless you had a trauma which may affect your training. Why should you treat your psychotherapist in any other way?

Still, I’m not a psychotherapist and probably don’t understand this profession.
