This upcoming year will mark Watsky’s 10 year anniversary of Invisible Inc. It’s hard to believe someone as unique and talented as him exists outside of the inner hip hop world. I only discovered his music a couple years ago, but he’s been well established on the underground scene. His tours continue to be sold out from state to state, his fourth album had assistance from Russell Simmons serving as exec. producer, and he’s an all-around cool person.

Starting out as a poet, Watsky got his big break when he was featured on HBO’s Def Poetry during the final season. From there, he utilized that appearance and began traveling the country doing spoken word. Along the way, he jumped into hip hop — marrying the two fields — and eventually became a NY Times best selling author with How To Ruin Everything.

But his story is something you can Google and find out in detail. My job was to get inside the mind of Watsky and ask him things that nobody else has. Has being a rapper and a poet played a huge role in being successful? How did he get Anderson .Paak to produce his entire All You Can Do album? I found out how intimidating Russell Simmons’ meetings can be. And I was able to get some details on his next album, a reunion with Invisible Inc.
