Happy 35th Anniversary, ‘Tales from the Crypt’
Today, we commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Tales from the Crypt, a unique American horror anthology television series. Created by William Gaines and Steven Dodd, the show debuted on the premium cable channel HBO. Hosted by the Cryptkeeper, a wisecracking corpse brought to life by puppeteers and voiced by John Kassir, the show’s episodes were primarily based on stories from the comic series The Haunt of Fear, The Vault of Horror, Crime SuspenStories, Shock SuspenStories, and Two-Fisted Tales. What set this series apart was its ability to include content like graphic violence, profanity, sexual activity, and nudity, a daring move for television at the time.
Tales from the Crypt was one of my favorite shows on HBO during the early 1990s. It was one of the best late-night shows ever made and an excellent series with horror stories told by the Cryptkeeper himself. I enjoyed watching the show and seeing some of my favorite actors, such as Christopher Reeve, Whoopi Goldberg, Joe Pesci, and Vanity, featured on it.
