Stay True to you
I know I’m going to be successful in whatever I do in life. People truly don’t understand the definitions of the word arrogance and confidence. Listen carefully: Merriam Webster defines the word arrogance as an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter or more important than other people.
Confidence is defined in multiple ways. One definition is: a feeling that someone or something is good or has the ability to succeed, a feeling of being certain that something will happen or that something is true. There are clear distinctions between these definitions. Arrogance should be used when someone is talking in a flaunting and flashy manner based off of his or her beliefs. Opposed to confidence, which should refer to when people talk about how they know they can succeed and make something happen. If the word “confidence” was really understood, there would be less so called arrogant people in their world, even in this room.
How many of you know Kanye West? How many of you think he is arrogant? How many of you think he is confident? In today’s media there is always talk about Kanye West; it’s inevitable. The man basically lives his life with us. But does anyone realize most of his comments are confidence-based and not solely arrogant. When describing himself , he defines himself as a God. This is straight up arrogant; there’s no if , ands, or buts about it. But what about when Kanye tattooed the first eight hit songs he produced on his left forearm? I believe that he takes pride in his work. However some people called him egotistical and said there was no reason for him to tattoo something on his body that true fans knew about him and he obviously he knew about himself. This isn’t arrogance. It’s just the a fact. The songs are hit records. What he does with his body does not reflect whether he is arrogant or not.
Outside of the field of musicians there are athletes that are seen as arrogant when they’re really confident. He is a five-division world champion, having won eight world titles and the lineal championship in four different weight classes. He is the Two-time Ringmagazine Fighter of the Year , winning the award in 1998 and 2007. He also has been named the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. This is a list of accolades of the undefeated boxer, Floyd “Money” Mayweather. This man is constantly criticized for what he says outside the ring. He make comments such as: “You know me. I’m running my mouth a lot, and I’m looking for a guy to shut me up. If you don’t shut me up, I’m going to keep running my mouth. Nobody can beat me. There is no way to beat me”. Although the comment Money made can be viewed as arrogant, there also is a strong case for it just being confidence. What Mayweather is saying is just fact. No one has beaten him in about 19 years. Mayweather has earned his confidence.
I know I’m going to be successful in whatever I do in life. No matter what job or field I enter, I know I will make the most of it. I have a strong work ethic and I’ve never been afraid to dream. No matter what obstacle may come my way, I keep fighting.
I have to keep fighting because I represent my family name. My actions do not only reflect who I am as a person. They reflect how I was raised.. I have to keep fighting so my parents can be proud. One of the biggest goals in my life is to make sure my parents don’t have to ever work again. I want them to live life to the fullest.
I have to keep fighting to make sure that my brother knows that giving up is never an option. My number one objective as the older one is to make sure my brother is better than me in every sense of the word. I focus most on him being a better student and basketball player than I am because I know he’s capable of doing so. I look at my life as a practice test for him. Once he see’s how I turn out, he’ll know how to do good on the real test, his life. Having more experience I can prepare him for obstacles he may encounter in the future. I can show him the tricks I know to make his life easier. When you shoot make sure you’re following through and using your index and middle finger to direct the ball. When mom is mad with you, just look her in the eye and listen. Don’t respond to everything she says , like I do, that’ll only make the situation worse.
This is similar to when I explain to someone how no matter what, I still make it to the gym. Most nights I go to sleep late and wake up very early . When I tell people what I do , they seemed surprised. I explain to them “ It’s what I do”. Why does this statement seem so arrogant? I’m just pointing out the obvious. I’ve been traveling the country playing basketball since I was 13. I put countless hours into perfecting my craft. My athleticism may come naturally, fortunately I’m very agile and can jump higher than most. However, I work to perfect other parts of my game, such as shooting. I sacrifice by missing family events and losing hours of sleep. Basketball is my escape from reality. Not knowing what could happen the next play is is the most exciting part. One day I want to be playing on national television with Pearley on the back of my jersey. Watch me be great .
