Indian Society and India

Exactly What Woman requires in India Today .

As I write this article out of despair and outburst I have tried to be as much rational and pragmatic I could be. The construct of society in our country and culture has been very ancient(since the time of Ramayan ) and vital one. More often than not society has had a strong say and opinion in people life decisions and personal matters .After Independence, It has been a law and rule forming body parallel to the constitution, IPC, and administration.Yet the history, as well as incidents from contemporary India, suggest that it has been just an abstraction and excuse behind the ill traditions and practices such as child marriage, widow discrimination, dowry, patriarchy, caste based discrimination & atrocities, woman & child harassment, honor killing and much more. We were lucky to have people such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar who worked selflessly to fight against these ill practices and make them legally void. After Independence, most of them are illegal as per the law but the question is Are they not in practice anymore? Sadly the answer is no for acts such as dowry, caste discrimination etc.
My point here is lawmakers and the great Constitution writers have done their side of contribution in the nation building very well but our society which constitutes each one of us has failed the nation largely. These laws have remained merely a bookish thing for underprivileged and those who are willing to go against the larger belief of the local group or “Samaj” as we call it. We don’t hear this samaj teaching their kids to respect each individual as equal irrespective of their religion, caste, color, sex, social status etc, just to regard an individual as human first. How many of parent’s mind telling their sons to have the basic decency to behave with a girl? How many times has anyone heard of a society supporting and helping rape or acid attack victims?
Above all we have the colonial educational system which teaches nothing more than that mugging facts and getting good grades will makes you grow as a great citizen even if it hardly tries to open your thought process capabilities, your ability to questions things the way they are, to build an ideology ,to have life principles and understanding them .Does the curriculum even somewhere remotely mentions excerpts from Bhagat Singh “Why I am an Atheist ?” , J.K. Nehru “Discovery Of India”, M.K. Gandhi “My Experiments with truth “?
To grow beautifully and better an entity has to go through renaissance and Indian Society has a long one Due. The command and responsibility of this change lie in the willpower and determination of youth of the country. We need to clearly recognize the ill-practices and traditions of the contemporary India and build an attitude to take stand against them if a fight is against all odds, if it’s your family and friends on the other side (Arjun has to kill his blood relatives in Mahabharata, for he fought for “Dharma” ) . Try to take stand for what you believe in rather than crumbling down and surrendering under the pressure of society, for the society is pseudo fear it didn’t give you anything and can’t take away something you have build on your own.Aspire to be like William Ernest Poem “Invictus “.One thing is promised if you go on this path this is not going to be easy but history remembers only those who goes against all odds to do good and fight for what they believe in. Never Ever Give up, I would always be there for you until my last breath. Fight For Fortune favors the brave.
We would have realised the Indian dream when we will be able to live in a society which is free from corruption ,discrimination based on caste, religion, region, colour ,when girls can breathe fearless, when we don’t have to ask or tell the caste/religion of the person we want to spend our life with, when there is no girl committing suicide because of her in-laws, people are not brazen enough to ask for dowry, and humanity is the new religion.
Ours is a good country but it can be better, a lot than what it is after 70 years of independence. Let’s work together to make this country and society Great as both are inter-dependable.

P.S — This is my attempt at writing my thoughts so pardon me if they are not coherent enough or feel that you simply wasted your time by reading it. Either way I would love to get your feedback if you have read it till the end :)
