Today is the first day since he was a child that Colin Kaepernick is not on a football team…and that is not OK.

I have to say this.

Since he was a young child, for going on twenty straight years now, when the football season began, Colin Kaepernick was on a team.

This morning, for the first time since he was a boy, because he took a quiet, peaceful stance against injustice and police brutality in America, Colin Kaepernick is not on a team.

This is not OK. Team executives, team owners, and the leading players, all now admit that the only reason he is not on a team is because of this stance — and that owners are aiming to freeze him out to make an example out of him.

This is not OK.

Colin Kaepernick is my friend and I am speaking out this morning as his brother. What the NFL has done, effectively banning him from the league in the prime of his career, is disgusting and painful. I know he can handle the weight of all of this, but he shouldn’t have to. Speaking out on injustice should not cost you your career and your livelihood — period. It’s not right, dammit.

If this past year has taught you anything at all, let it be that many rich white men in power will say or do absolutely anything to maintain and increase that power — even if it means throwing a genuinely good person under the bus. That’s exactly what they’ve done with Colin.

Now, I’m asking from the bottom of my heart, PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS LEAGUE.

Do not watch these games.
Do not watch the highlights.
Do not go to the games.
Do not buy NFL Sunday Ticket.

It’s important. This is a critical moment for us to show what we are made of. Will you allow an American corporation to end a man’s career because he took a peaceful stance against injustice?

Will you choose recreation and entertainment over freedom and equality? YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT. WE ARE BETTER THAN THAT.

I am boycotting the NFL and I want you to stand up, not just for Colin, but for yourself, by joining this boycott. We have marched, we have protested, we have tweeted and Facebooked, and I want to encourage you to continue to do all of those things, but today — let’s take our economic power to another level.

Today, refuse to watch these games. Do something else. If you are not in the path of the storms today, go out and enjoy your life. Spend quality time with your friends and family. Hell — surf the net. Watch Netflix. Clean the house. Wash the car. Read a book.

Next week, we are going to expand our boycott to the NFL’s sponsors. They must feel the pain and blowback of the decisions being made right now.

I love and appreciate you all.
