The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Agreements

All agreements are made up of three key elements.

  1. Communication
  2. Understanding
  3. Trust

In any agreement, we start off with a lot of the third. Trust is why we agree to do something with someone in the first place. But, as it sometimes does, if that trust begins to wane, the other two elements deteriorate pretty quickly, too.

By the end of a failed agreement, there is little left of all three. We get chippy, make assumptions, fuses get shorter.

If we could increase #1, we’d quickly get back to #2. Which rebuilds #3.

It is cyclical. But doesn’t need to be cynical.
