I have never tried to quit social media, but I have really cut back on it the past year or so. I don’t think I could ever quit completely because part of my job involves managing clients’ social media accounts, so I’m on and off at different times throughout the day/week.
Aside from that, though, I don’t really want to because Facebook provides a sort of company for me. My only housemate is my 3-year-old Australian shepherd/lab, Daisy, and I work out of a studio in my home (I’ve had my own design business for about 15 years). It’s not uncommon for me to go for days without actually interacting with another person aside from text or e-mail.
Facebook gives me a chance to post some goofy thing that pops in my head, have a few interactions and then get back to work. I’ve often said that social media is my workplace water cooler. And as long as that’s how I use it, I’m fine with that. But when I catch myself in bed, scrolling through pages of stuff I don’t really care about, I want to kick myself. Fortunately, that is pretty rare as I don’t usually bring my phone in my bedroom, but every now and again I find myself scrolling away.
Great article…thanks for sharing. :)
