The Heidelberg Project in Detroit was started in 1986 when Tyree Guyton came home to find poverty destroying the neighborhood he grew up in. Working with his grandfather and neighborhood kids, they began clearing abandoned lots and he started using the stuff they found to create art.
The news has been reporting on Detroit’s resurgence a lot the past few years, but Heidelberg Project was way ahead of the curve.
