For many members of the SheStarts community, like for so many others, yesterday was a difficult day after the election. It seemed as though the values we hold dear — diversity, inclusion, gender equity, innovation — were rejected by much of our country. But a sold out-crowd representing the full spectrum of diversity showed up to stand strong for those values and to support the women-led startups participating in SheDemos.
A few tears were shed, many hugs were given and received, and the teams participating in the showcase and in the pitch competition put on their game faces and showed the attendees how they intended to leave their mark on the world. An engaged audience met and spoke with the teams participating in the showcase and voted for their fan favorite.
The teams who took home the prizes are:
Fan Favorite: Wanderful
Wanderful is an international membership community of independent, adventurous, globally minded women who travel. Its mission is to connect women travelers together by empowering them with the tools they need to go abroad and facilitating a trusted network that can help guide them in their journeys.
In a world where women have unique needs when they travel abroad (from dressing appropriately to understanding how they can expect to be treated as a woman to concerns about her safety at night), Wanderful’s network consists of thousands of women around the world who use one another to prepare for and maximize their travel adventures.
Pitch Winner: kweliTV
kweliTV is an interactive, streaming TV network dedicated to the stories, issues and culture of the global black community. It offers indie films, web shows, documentaries, and news programming of the entire African diaspora. KWELI (KWAL lee) means “TRUTH” IN SWAHILI.
With more studies revealing the lack of diversity in media and tech, kweliTV sees a huge opportunity in not only creating a platform that allows black people across the globe to watch and celebrate content that speaks to their culture, but also provides filmmakers of color with award-winning content a space promote and make money off of their work.
A media company that is dedicated to telling the stories of the global black community and a business focused on supporting and encouraging women to engage in global travel were the big winners of SheDemos. There is opportunity in learning about new cultures and in diversity.
Thanks to our partner the Babson WIN Lab for working with us to pull together this great event.
Finally, thank you to each and every team who participated and to every guest who showed up at SheDemos. You inspire us. We truly are stronger together.
