Three Self-Beliefs You Need For Ultimate Career Success
What do you tell yourself before a job interview or other public speaking situation at work? It takes patience and self-care to notice if you are talking yourself up or tearing yourself down.
Then it takes courage to do something about it so you can shine and not melt in the hot seat.
While helping hundreds of jobseekers, career changers, and future entrepreneurs, I have seen how self-beliefs affect career success. They can help us or harm us big time when under pressure. If the person believes at their core they will be successful, they deal with the stress much better. If they are “faking it until they make it”, the journey to get to their career goals takes longer.
Believing in yourself cannot be faked, but it can be strengthened.
There are three types of self-beliefs you can upgrade so you attract more career success. I am sharing some tips on how to build up your self-belief for each area below and on Instagram. I want you to have this information handy when you need it most.
Start using these power statements and actions whenever you notice doubt, confusion, or fear of failure rising up about your career.
Believe In Your Path
It’s easier sometimes to believe more that we just got lucky rather than we are worthy of being selected.
After getting a call back to interview, I often hear from clients:
“I’m not what they are really looking for.”
“I suck at talking about myself.”
“How did I even get selected to interview? Maybe it was a mistake.”
“Other people have more qualifications and experience than me.”
“What if they ask a question I don’t know?”
“I just want this to be over.”
When you hear negative noise in your head, instead repeat to yourself this first power statement of “I AM CHOSEN TO BE HERE.”
By quickly replacing self-talk that is reminding you of your inner doubts, fears, or anxiety with a positive power statement, you increase your chance of representing your best self.
You can further decrease the harmful energy of negative thoughts about your career path by using this power statement as a breathing exercise.
Deeply breathe in: I AM CHOSEN
Hold that in for two seconds.
Then deeply breathe out: TO BE HERE
Repeat at least through five deep breathes.
This is your time, your opportunity. It belongs to no one else but you. Allow this power statement + breath combo to do its job of helping you stay in the ✨present moment. You will then be ahead of many others who seem less comfortable in the hot seat because their mind is stuck with worries about past mistakes or their future at work.
Believe In Your Value
Do you struggle knowing how to share your value to others so that they can see it? When there is high competition or much at stake based on our performance, it can be even more challenging to feel that the unique spark we each have is valuable.
It is more important than ever that we see and share our worth in the workplace. When under pressure at a meeting or in the hot seat at a job interview, that value will be questioned. You need to be ready without going on the defensive. Begin that process by saying to yourself the power statement of “I BRING VALUE TO SHARE.”
When should you use this one most? Catch yourself when you think any of these three negative thoughts below. Then try my suggestion of a positive action statement instead. When you switch to affirming your skills, experience, and hard work each time you notice a thought that tears you down, you will instead build yourself up. This will make it easier to share your value to others with authentic confidence.
1. “Other people could do this job better than me.”
Change it to this positive action statement: “I will start writing down my big accomplishments and small wins at work.”
2. “I am scared to be rejected for a promotion.”
Change it to this positive action statement: “I will ask about and pay more attention to the types of problems that have to be solved at the position above mine.”
3. “I should keep waiting until I have more experience to apply.”
Change it to this positive action statement: “I will make a genuine connection over coffee or lunch with one person each month that is in a job I want to be in one day.”
Nobody else has your exact life experience, family background, or personal struggles that you have triumphed over.
Walk into that meeting or job interview with the mindset that you DO have ✨value to share.
When you genuinely believe in yourself, employers, hiring managers, or potential clients can more easily trust the value that you are asking them to see.
Believe In Your Resilience
How much do you believe that no matter what, you can handle what happens? The strength of our resilience gets tested big time when trying to be promoted, making a career change, or hearing back from a job interview.
Nobody wants to be rejected. And when salary, prestige, and opportunity are on the line, a closed door feels even more painful.
We cannot take a set back in our career too personally or allow it to dim our light for too long. Recovery and moving forward comes faster to those that have practiced believing at their core the power statement of “IT IS MY TIME TO SHINE.”
Body language communicates even louder than what we say with words. Combining these power statements with movement can help you express the growing belief in yourself more strongly in your body. Try it next time you are walking, lifting weights, or even dancing. I’ve posted before about some of my favorite spiritual practices that also help me and clients shine. The effect of finding what strengthens your self-belief muscle is priceless to your career growth.
Do you know what charges up your inner battery? It’s different for everyone. When you consistently connect with a higher energy source or perform a spiritual practice, deeply feeling that your own skills and talents matter becomes easier. Recovering from failure on the job, rejection from an employer, or burn out at work also speeds up.
In today’s demanding workforce, at first things may not work out how you want. Obstacles will not hold you back long when you can back up your skills, qualifications, and experience with genuine believe in yourself.
As soon as you begin any job search, career change, or side hustle, I recommend making time to do activities with these power statements or create your own. Partnering with a career coach or other professional will keep you accountable to this inner work and get you to that brighter future at work faster.
