Climate change may make certain cities more competitive

Could Climate Change impact Amazon’s decision for where to build HQ2? The data from the two reports below points to a couple interesting trends as to which cities will be best suited to absorb climate impacts. First, many of the midwestern cities in economic decline will avoid much of the costs of climate change. The cities in this region performing quite well include Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Toronto, meaning they may continue to grow a faster pace as climate change inflicts more damage on other cities.

The Winners:

  • Canada
  • Great Lakes
  • Greater Appalachia (Atlanta — Nashville — Pittsburgh)

The Losers:

  • Coastal Cities (sea-level rise)
  • Gulf and Atlantic Coast States (hurricanes)
  • Western Cities (water shortages, wildfires and heat waves)
