Deciding on my Career Goals

Deciding on a career was always the hardest part for me. I always felt indecisive and could never stick to just one idea of what I wanted to do with my life. My curiosity and interests had me exploring multiple creative avenues. Growing up, I was always the person that enjoyed drawing and creating digital art. This later continued with me learning about photography, film, and even various crafts in high school. Because of this, I started off thinking I was going to go into illustration or animation for college. After developing more work and continuing my education, I realized throughout my journey that graphic design was the avenue that allowed me to incorporate my various interests into one.

While I was taking more advanced graphic design classes in the BFA program, my peers began branching out and finding their focus within the field. At the beginning, I believed being accepted was the end all, be all of my college career. I eventually learned that this was definitely not the case. Even after getting into the Graphic Design BFA program, I still struggled with getting more specific with my future career.

After a semester or two of underlying uncertainty, I found particular enjoyment in designing websites and interfaces for mobile apps. I realized how much I enjoyed the problem solving aspect of design and thinking through all the scenarios that a user would deal with when using the app. Developing interesting packaging or conceptualizing campaigns is great, but UI design felt more fulfilling for me.

With this, I still want to pursue graphic design as a career, but with an emphasis in UI/UX design. Focusing on this particular aspect of design is definitely something I hope to do for the next five to ten years. While this is my goal for now, I still plan to incorporate my other interests to help further my career in later years.

Hi there! I’m currently a senior in the CSULB Graphic Design BFA program. When I’m not glued to my screen, I enjoy drawing, photography and drinking tea.
