Atatürk International Airport welcomed last Saturday its last passengers. It now leaves room for the new Istanbul International Airport.

It is located on the European side of Istanbul

This new airport platform is located about 40 kilometers north of Istanbul, on the European side of the city. Inaugurated last October by the President of the country, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, this airport has come into service gradually with 10 daily flights.

It gets the code from Atatürk airport

Rejected several times, Atatürk’s move to the new airport, which has not yet been named by the Turkish president, was fully conducted this weekend. The new international airport in Istanbul recovers in passing the code “IST”, which until now designated that of Atatürk. The latter adopts the code “ISL” for the freight. On its Travel Report website, the Quai d’Orsay nevertheless recommends regularly checking the information of the airlines in case of flight to Istanbul or transit via Turkey.

It can accommodate 90 million passengers

The new airport can, to date, accommodate 90 million passengers. But it was designed, according to the will of President Erdogan, to be able to receive 200 million pax by 2028. It would then become the busiest airport in the world. The Turkish Airlines company announced this weekend to be fully operational and will increase even more in the coming years. With the aim of transporting “120 million passengers a year by 2023”.
