HOMELESS FONTS
Yes, this is a real thing. I stumbled across this earlier today on AdWeek and thought it was a really creative solution to a societal problem.
Started by the Arrels Foundation in Barcelona, homelessfonts.org was born to showcase a variety of fonts created from homeless people’s handwriting. The foundation works with homeless people in Barcelona to turn their unique handwriting (often seen on their creative homemade signs) into a typeface that can be purchased by brands and design professionals for an affordable price.
Each person’s handwriting is very personal and tells a story, a distinct reflection of that individual’s character. The profit each typeface makes goes towards supporting that particular homeless person and you can check out their story/background next to their font on the website.
This is a great way to humanize the homeless and shift the negative perception that the public has of them by demonstrating that they are in fact, unique individuals just like the rest of us. It also gives these homeless people the opportunity, hope, and means they need to get their life back on track after being derailed from the unfortunate circumstances that can happen to anyone.
