Subtly Animated Movie Posters
Think GIFs, but very subtly. Disney just released their new theatrical posters to promote their latest movie, Into the Woods, a cinema adaptation of the Broadway musical. Have a look at them below:

Notice how the animation is not in the featured character’s physical body or face, but rather some variation in the background of the woods they are in whether it be some slight wind rustling the leaves or shadows and fog billowing. These changing environmental elements help heighten the eeriness of the woods in a 3-D way and establish a tone for the film before any trailers are released. In my opinion, this is the perfect amount of animation to add to a movie poster because it’s not too over the top distracting like a short video or 3-D visual is. It’s not meant to be a mini trailer, it’s a movie poster. It also adds the right amount of pizzaz to differentiate itself from the other 2-D posters. I’m excited to see where this new trend takes us in the design and advertising world. There is a lot of potential for some very cool things to happen.
