Sometimes it seems like everyone and their mother battles depression, so I forget that there are people out there who never have, and never will. Isn’t that a little bit crazy? Some of us will deal with it our entire lives. And it will be different for each of us, but it might well be called our normal.

Is depression ever really normal?

Honestly, it isn’t any single one thing. It’s so many things combined. Normal, expected, a natural response to trauma or other deep pain — it can be any or all of those things.

But there are also a lot of other things it isn’t, even when it carries a certain reputation.

It isn’t laziness, because you actually want to do more than the illness will allow.

Depression isn’t a bad attitude. Whether you believe it’s chemical, circumstantial, or a mixture of both (that’s my pick), it isn’t anything anyone can get over through the power of positive thinking. You’re probably thinking more about sadness.

Depression isn’t a lack of caring. Did you know you can be depressed but still care too much? That’s a thing you might not know if you’ve never been through it for yourself. Trust me, it isn’t fun.
