White Evangelical Christians Are The Real Disgrace In America

You overlooked everything evil about Trump. Are you happy now?

What was once the inspiring dream of living in America has now become a living nightmare. But guess what? I am not surprised. Our country has been ripped apart by a white evangelical Christian agenda: power at any price. And a price paid by anyone but you.

You willingly and happily aligned yourself with what is undoubtedly one of the most sleazy men in American history, and you call him good. YOU call him chosen by God.

People like me were skeptical from the start. We asked what "good fruit" is in Trump’s life. You told us to be kind because Donald Trump is just a baby Christian. We asked about his foul and hateful tongue which routinely lashes out at women or anyone else he doesn’t like and you told us it was old news. Fake news. That he had somehow changed, but you never gave any proof.

You said God was doing good things through Donald Trump.

Were you lying or simply stupid? Did you ever really believe the garbage excuses you made for this bully of a president? The shoddy businessman with a history of forcing the poor out of their homes?

Let’s be honest. You sold your souls to the devil to further your personal and corrupt religious ideology. Because your hot button issues count for more than strangers' lives. Abortion. Abortion. Abortion. Planned Parenthood. Sexual education. Evolution. Welfare. SNAP. WIC. Shut it all down, right?

As a result, you have expected nothing from Trump. Zero accountability. Zero goodness. Zero leadership. All you wanted was access to power when it comes to your agenda.

And here we are. Behold! The great and wonderful works of God! His glory expressed through Donald Trump:

Parents and children ripped apart everyday. Surely that will show the world something about God’s agape love, right? We now have a zero tolerance policy in America that says those seeking asylum may flee for their life and for the lives of their children but this administration will bring down the hand of God upon their heads to ensure they suffer separation and internment. And you, my dear Trump-loving Christians, will call it good.

How am I not surprised? It's easy.

Practically every Christian denomination has a long history of violence. All for a sick quest of political power. We’ve already seen your incredible zeal to injure in the name of God.

I watch the videos. I read the testimonies of non-profits working to reunite these families who did nothing wrong except dream of a better life. It’s all terrible and it’s all sad, yet again, none of it shocks me.

Because I know you. I grew up steeped in your backwards ways and pithy quotes like, "Respect authority--it was placed there by God," "Anyone who doesn’t work doesn’t eat," "You can sleep when you’re dead," and "America is being judged for abortion." I know full well your ability to cherry pick the Bible as it suits you and create your own toxic narrative.

Plus, I know what it’s like to be in a crisis pregnancy and deal with white evangelicals. When my daughter was an infant and I began to support her by writing from home, you fought so hard to discourage me. And then you tried to convince me that separation from my nursing child was the best thing I could do. You saw how hard I worked and how much I put her needs before my own, and that was never enough for you. You hissed doubts into my ear like a slithering snake that I could never give her a good life, and I could never be a good parent. Not like you. And you did this when she was 8 months old. A year old. A year-and-a-half. Mother-child bond be damned.

So clearly, Trump’s zero tolerance policy pairs perfectly with your zero shame. The Emperor has no clothes, but you continue to tell him he’s the best, best, bestest dressed ruler in the world.

“So the idea of zero tolerance under the stated policy is that we don’t care why you’re afraid. We don’t care if it’s religion, political, gangs, anything. For all asylum seekers, you are going to be put in jail, in a detention center, and you’re going to have your children taken away from you. That’s the policy. They’re not 100 percent able to implement that because of a lot of reasons, including just having enough judges on the border. And bed space. There’s a big logistical problem because this is a new policy. So the way they get to that policy of taking the kids away and keeping the adults in detention centers and the kids in a different federal facility is based on the legal rationale that we’re going to convict you, and since we’re going to convict you, you’re going to be in the custody of the U.S. Marshals, and when that happens, we’re taking your kid away. So they’re not able to convict everybody of illegal entry right now just because there aren’t enough judges on the border right now to hear the number of cases that come over, and then they say if you have religious persecution or political persecution or persecution on something that our asylum definition recognizes, you can fight that case behind bars at an immigration detention center. And those cases take two, three, four, five, six months. And what happens to your child isn’t really our concern. That is, you have made the choice to bring your child over illegally. And this is what’s going to happen.” (Interview below.)

Here’s the sad reality of our world: evil people have always separated children from their families. Be it the holocaust, the crusades, or Japanese internment camps... evil gets a foothold in the world all the time. And far too many white evangelicals continue to let it happen.

One day there will be a reckoning, and when that day comes, who will speak for you? You already think that you’re the most persecuted people in this country while children under three live in cages in old Walmart buildings, not knowing if they will ever see their parents again. So by all means, do remember:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

And yes, I’m still not engaging in snarky arguments with strangers online. But when it comes to my Medium stories, as usual, honesty (anything) goes.
