Some of the comments here have made me even sadder than your writing. I live in England and I’m shocked at the levels of racism in America that even proms can be segregated. Things are a lot less horrible over here but racism has come out of the closet recently with Brexit. To the people who tell the writer to get over it and ignore the micro aggressions etc — don’t you all have bad days either? Don’t you get frustrated that you have this or that little problem that need to be fixed? How would you feel if that little problem was ingrained into the society that you live in, rose it’s ugly head regularly, and could only be fixed by white people recognising their white privilege, humbly accepting they have been wrong and advocating for change. You may not claim to be racist but telling a black person to get over their blackness, chin up and wipe away the tears is dismissing and denying oppression. We cannot move forward as a society until our children are born on an equal footing regardless of colour, gender, sex, disability, who we choose to love or what religion we choose to follow.
